The Hawks on Friday seized large quantities of counterfeit washing powder at a manufacturing facility in Springs, Gauteng.

Hawks spokesman Lt. Col. Philani Nkwalase said the Hawks serious trade crimes investigation team, along with Spoor brand advocates and Fisher Attorneys, were assisted by members of the Springs Police Department’s Public Order Policing (POP) in conducting a search and seizure operation on the premises.

Samples of the counterfeit products were purchased while the Intellectual Property Rights Division of the Serious Trade Crimes Investigation, based at Hawks’ headquarters, was conducting a preliminary investigation, Nkwalase said.

“The team led by Hawks found the premises to be a large scale manufacturing and distribution facility.

“A huge amount of raw materials, including machinery and [an] industrial sifting machine, unbranded washing powder, fake labels with well-known brands from different owners, sodium, filled and empty buckets, electronic scales, dyes and dyes were all found and confiscated for further investigation,” he said.

Nkwalase said the combined value of the goods seized had not yet been established.

A 42-year-old suspect has been arrested and criminal and civil proceedings are ongoing, Nkwalase said.

He would also be served with a summons to appear in Springs Magistrate’s Court for breach of Counterfeit Goods Act 37, 1997 once all inquiries were complete.
