The locations of the DUI checkpoints are determined based on data showing incidents of accidents and arrests related to impaired driving. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by pulling suspected impaired drivers off the road.

Commander Pasos, commander of the traffic group, said: “Restricted drivers put others on the road at significant risk. Any preventive measures that reduce the number of disabled drivers on our roads will significantly improve road safety.”

The Los Angeles Police Department is reminding the public that driving disruptions are not just caused by alcohol. Some prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs can interfere with driving. While medical and recreational marijuana is legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a driver’s license suspension.

Funding for this program was provided through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
